Microsoft + Seinfeld = Trying to connect with people?! Stop kidding

First part of the Microsoft brand image revamp had not been well understood, as I was mentioning here. The second episode aired tonight would be sure to leverage the social media marketing since the second ad was awaited to be better. If good, it would definitly change the deal, turning Microsoft into a fine brand, joking about itself and engaging with people, like Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions (the MS advertising network) did with the so famous video “The break-up” with the compelling baseline “Bring the love back”. Microsoft and Crispin Porter + Bogusky should have taken into account that baseline and learned about their own ad network moto … here is the episode 2 of the Microsoft brand image campaign.

The regular US family and Microsoft

This video is the long version of the TV spot that was broadcasted tonight. The deal is real. After having seeded the “delicious future” message through the 1st episode Microsoft, the second deals with the “We connect with the real people” message. Poorly I may say. What’s I understand in this video involving the 2 of Gates and Seinfeld in a regular US family is that they’re right and the regular family is wrong:

  • Bill and Jerry are accused to have stolen an object from the family.
  • The thing is the daughter had put the object in Bill’s backback to get back her bedroom.
  • Bill and Jerry find out that it was the daughter who did it and get a conversation with her before leaving this family.
  • Video ends with both of Bill and Jerry leaving the family house telling they did managed to connect with that family, and Jerry asking “You’ve connected with a billion people, what’s next?”

I may have missed a part of the 4 min video, but weren’t the Bill and Jerry duo blasted out of the family house in the end? Didn’t they leave the house as thiefs? And they still pretend they’ve successfully connected with that family?

Is Microsoft mocking the US people?

Microsoft is playing a dangerous game. Showing that side of the regular US family, the dark side of an happy family. And what’s the point with the old lady? Is she meant to be the smiling effect? The video is going too far for me. Microsoft PR people would be at work for a long long time thanks to that video. From recreating their brand image, the Richmond company is only showing they’re the world ruler and they don’t care about anybody else (the fact Jerry is always asking Bill “Now you’ve made xxx great thing, what’s next?” proves they don’t care about others but Microsoft). That’s a shame for such an advertising agency to have released so poor videos. And there’s still nothing coming out about generating a conversation and engaging with their customers … I hope the cliffhanger would be something great, anything can be better that the 2 first parts.
